Diving Sites in Komodo National Park
Batu Bolong
Central Area
Batu Bolong, a tiny rocky pinnacle between Komodo and Tatawa Islands, is one of the park’s most iconic dive sites. Known for its vibrant coral gardens and abundant marine life, it offers a dive experience like no other.
As you descend, you’ll be surrounded by colorful schools of reef fish, including anthias and fusiliers. Look out for Napoleon wrasse, giant trevally, sweetlips, and white-tip reef sharks. The site also attracts large turtles, manta rays, and even the occasional dolphin, making every dive an adventure. Strong currents can be tricky, but the rewards are worth it—Batu Bolong is truly a diver’s paradise.
Castle Rock
North Area
Castle Rock, located north of Komodo Island, is an exciting dive site famous for its strong currents and abundant marine life. As you descend, you’ll be surrounded by schools of fusiliers, trevallies, and barracudas. It’s also a great spot to see grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and the impressive Napoleon wrasse.
The top of this coral-covered seamount is just 5 meters below the surface, making it perfect for spotting big fish in action. With clear waters and plenty to see, Castle Rock offers an unforgettable diving experience.
Crystal Rock
North Area
Crystal Rock, located near Castle Rock, is known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. The pinnacle’s top just reaches the surface, and it’s covered in colorful hard and soft corals. Expect to see reef sharks, manta rays, and large schools of anthias and yellow-ribbon sweetlips.
The site offers excellent visibility and a chance to encounter diverse species in one dive. Strong currents can be present, making it suitable for more experienced divers, though less experienced groups can enjoy the dive on the protected side for a more relaxed experience.
Manta Point (Makassar Reef)
Central Area
Located east of Komodo Island, Manta Point, also known as Makassar Reef, is a shallow drift dive site famous for its manta ray sightings. This site features manta cleaning stations where you can observe these majestic creatures up close as they get cleaned by smaller fish. In addition to manta rays, you might spot eagle rays, green sea turtles, black mantas, whitetip reef sharks, and schools of unicornfish.
The dive offers a unique chance to see up to 100 manta rays together, especially during peak seasons. The vibrant coral gardens and diverse marine life make this an unforgettable dive experience.
The Cauldron (Shotgun)
North Area
Located between Gili Lawadarat and Gili Lawalaut, The Cauldron, or “Shotgun,” offers a thrilling drift dive through a natural channel with a bowl-shaped area. The strong currents create an exhilarating experience as you’re propelled through the channel, making it feel like you’re being “shot” through the water.
This site is known for its high concentration of plankton, attracting schools of trevallies, sharks, and sometimes manta rays. As you drift along, you might also encounter mantas, adding to the excitement of this unique dive.
Siaba Besar
Central Area
Nestled within a sheltered bay, Siaba Besar is perfect for less experienced divers and macro enthusiasts. This calm site features a large hard coral reef teeming with green turtles, stingrays, and vibrant fish like sweetlips and starry pufferfish. The bay’s protection makes it an ideal spot for spotting juvenile species, including baby bumphead parrotfish and Napoleon wrasse.
Siaba Besar is renowned for its rich macro life, with frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish, ghost pipefish, and nudibranchs. It’s also a great spot for snorkeling and offers exciting night dives during liveaboard trips.
Yellow Wall
South Area
Situated at the southern end of Rinca Island, Yellow Wall is a vibrant dive site celebrated for its colorful coral formations. The wall is adorned with yellow and orange soft corals, attracting a variety of reef fish, nudibranchs, and other small critters.
Ideal for both day and night dives, it offers a rich array of invertebrates. Divers can spot sleeping fish, spiny and slipper lobsters, cleaner shrimp, and reef crabs, alongside Spanish dancers and a diversity of tunicates. Currents typically flow north, making the western tip the best entry point for an enjoyable drift dive.
Siaba Kecil
Central Area
Located opposite Siaba Besar, Siaba Kecil offers an exciting drift dive over vibrant coral gardens and steep slopes. Known for its strong currents, this site is perfect for intermediate to advanced divers.
Drift along the eastern side of the island. Depending on the tide, you can drift from north to south or south to north. Expect to see green sea turtles, reef sharks, and manta rays, with occasional sightings of dugongs. The reef is rich with Gorgonian fans, sweetlips, and giant trevallies. The northern coral gardens are great for turtles and fish, while the southern area is ideal for macro life.
Tatawa Besar
Central Area
Discover the enchanting coral gardens of Tatawa Besar with a drift dive that most of the time starts at the island’s northern tip where the reef is more vibrant between 5 to 15 meters depth.
This site boasts a rich tapestry of reef life, featuring giant trevally, schools of fusiliers, angel fish, and sweetlips. You’ll often spot reef sharks and Hawksbill turtles, with occasional sightings of mantas. Explore the diverse coral formations, including fields of hard and orange soft corals, where crocodile fish and octopuses hide. While the drift is typically gentle, it can pick up speed with strong currents. The dive concludes in a protected area, ideal for finding mandarin fish and other fascinating critters.
Pink Beach (Pantai Merah)
Central Area
Pink Beach is famous for its unique pink sand and easy shore dives. Start your dive at the large rock that sticks out at low tide. Here, you’ll see colorful coral gardens and lots of small fish. Look for interesting critters like Leaf scorpionfish, Blue-ribbon eels, and nudibranchs.
You might even spot larger fish in deeper waters. This spot is great for both daytime and night dives, with the best visibility when the tide is going out. Snorkeling from the beach lets you enjoy the pink sand, which gets its color from tiny organisms in the coral reefs.
Nusa Kode
South Area
Nusa Kode, located on the southern side of Rinca Island, features striking underwater landscapes with large boulders. Dive here to encounter impressive pelagic species like giant groupers and potato cod.
You might also spot mola mola (sunfish) and schools of bohar snapper. The rugged terrain and diverse marine life make this site a thrilling dive. The chance to see rare species adds to the excitement, making Nusa Kode a standout spot for adventurous divers.
